Adelaide 2010 AuPS/ASB Meeting Outreach Programme

Australian Physiological Society Outreach Program - 2010

The AuPS will be undertaking an Outreach Program with High School teachers on the first full day (29th November 2010) our Scientific Meeting to be held at the National Wine Centre, Adelaide.

One lucky teacher will win a new CX21LED microscope for their school generously donated by Olympus Microscopes.

The program aims to give High School science teachers an insight into both teaching and research aspects of physiology and associated areas. The Program will match a scientist with a teacher for the first full day of the meeting who will act as a mentor. We will have 2 sessions focused on physiology education at the tertiary level. Teachers will then have the opportunity to attend poster and oral sessions on a variety of research themes related to physiology, biology and medicine. The ultimate aim of the Outreach Program is to educate attending teachers on tertiary level science education modalities, to illustrate the practical outcomes of science education in a research setting and ultimately to improve science education and interest at the secondary level.

Teachers must apply to attend this meeting and successful teachers will be awarded a certificate of attendance at the program as part of their professional development. Registration will cost $25 per teacher and teachers can register once they are informed that they are a successful applicant. Approximately 15-20 teachers will be selected from all applicants.

Scientists will have the opportunity during the registration process to nominate themselves as a mentor. We anticipate a positive experience for both parties which will involve attendance at a breakfast (free) and interactions at some of the sessions such as the poster/lunch session. Full details for all interested parties are available online.
